Short Biography

Born and raised in Milan (Italy), class of ’74, I became enamoured of anything that is alive and grow since childhood. Curious by nature, I often look at things with the intent of understanding how they worked, and ways to fix them when they would stop ticking. So it was how I decided to become a doctor. And because curiosity has no boundaries, I have taken up interest in the vascular system, which is at the root of life and sprinkles all and every corner of our body. But I have also always sided for all that is neglected and considered of small worth (by those that do not know it and/or understand its real value). Hence, after completing the training in cardiovascular surgery, I started to concentrate on the venous pathology and the impact that this have on people. It was a hard decision to leave behind all that I learnt about arteries, aneurysms and heart diseases. But my main purpose has always been to make people feel better, and there is nothing for it much more than to cure the venous diseases. I might not save the life of one, but I can make a hundred feel better. And this is what I do best in life!
In February 2023 Dr. Gabriele Bertoni was awarded an Honorary Senior Lecturer at The College of Phlebology.

Professional Profile

In the last fifteen years, I focused on the fast-growing world of phlebology. Overall, I have performed well over 5000 varicose veins operations. These include about 2500 thermal ablations for minimally invasive treatment of trunkal reflux (since September 2009, using laser and radiofrequency), as well as ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy treatment, pelvic veins embolisation and avulsion of VVs. All these operations are carried out under local anaesthetic on an ambulatory/day-surgery basis. I have performed the first microwave GSV ablation in the Country.
In conjunction with the Interventional Radiology Service at San Gerardo Hospital, I have set up the Pelvic Venous Reflux embolization service, which has never been performed before in the Trust. Within six months I managed to streamline the patient’s journey from the first consultation to the radiology suite. This included having to train all the personnel and my colleagues on the pathology (rather unknown at the Institution, at the time) and to train a gynecologist to perform TV Duplex according to the “HH protocol”, as performed at the Whiteley Clinic. The latter was achieved organising a two-days in-hospital teaching with a TWC sonographer.
In recent years I have expanded my interest on the ever growing field of aesthetic phlebology, dealing with veins on the forehead and facial area, hands, breast and feet.
